About Mathematicsk12
MATHEMATICSK12 is a website for homeschool parents and teachers to make teaching math easy and enjoyable.
Teach math with story books? Kristin’s philosophy as a teacher and a homeschool mom is that children learn through stories – even math! Stories have been successfully employed by educators since the dawn of time in the form of myths and legends. Stories not only keep a child riveted on the subject matter, but they provide a framework in which to store and retrieve bits of knowledge. Stories make information palatable and stories make information stick. Reading math stories help put math concepts in context and biographies of mathematicians inspire students to excel.
At MATHEMATICSK12 we recommed complementing math workbooks with real math books. Real math books are books that are written by published authors whose intent is first and foremost to engage children.
Math books make the list if they are educational, interesting and fun. There are no textbooks in this list.
The math books Kristin has chosen are Real Books.
Real books are books that have been written by real children’s book authors not a panel of textbook editors.
Real Books are more fun.
Are your students bored with math textbooks? Even though we do admit that math textbooks are necessary, we highly recommend pairing them with real math story books. Real Books, written by real authors and sold in real book stores must compete in the real world. Children’s math books are above all designed to appeal to children. If children don’t enjoy the books, they don’t sell. In addition, most of the math books on this list have been tested by Kristin’s students and her son for the enjoyment factor.
Real Books save time.
Children’s book authors invest hundreds of hours researching each topic. Every book on our MATHEMATICSK12 list represents hundreds of hours of researching, writing, and illustrating. Multiply that by the 50 plus books on each list and this list contains 5000 plus hours of preparation, more than any parent or teacher could provide in a years worth of lectures and activities. So picking up a book and reading it to your child is giving them the best introduction available on any given topic.
